ATKV mobile network: Affordable, top-notch
The ATKV's own mobile network offers an exceptionally affordable service that will benefit many.
The ATKV mobile network offers various advantages, including the ability to manage your data and airtime in one place, conveniently send data and airtime to loved ones, and enjoy exclusive access to the best expiring and non-expiring data bundles.
“We are a diverse and inclusive organisation that aims to keep people from all corners of the country connected,” says Jackie Ströh, manager of the ATKV’s Membership Affairs Department.
“The ATKV realised that our branch members' funds can sometimes be limited. The reduced rates and other benefits offered by the ATKV mobile network will make it easier for our people to stay connected with their friends and loved ones.
“We also want to reach young people through technology. We want to challenge the perception that civic and membership organisations are mainly intended for older people. The ATKV is indeed cool, and we want to reach and empower our youth through this technology.”
The ATKV mobile network’s main partners are MTN and megsApp, and the network will use these companies’ infrastructure and resources to deliver a quality service.
But what exactly sets the ATKV mobile network apart from the other major network providers in South Africa?
“Significantly lower rates, with certain packages offering transferable data and related benefits,” explains Jackie.
“But we’re not a large corporate company. We’re introducing the ATKV mobile network to make a difference in our communities and to make it possible for people who may not have the financial means to stay connected with the rest of the world. Many of the ATKV mobile network’s services will also be used in our own projects.”
Jackie adds that, at first, mobile phones will not be available through the ATKV mobile network, so users will need to have their own devices. There will also be no contracts, as with traditional service providers.
“It’s a pay-as-you-go system, and users can keep their existing cellphone numbers,” she says.

megsApp, the developer behind the ATKV mobile network app, provides all the technology powering this exciting new venture. Mighael Basson, Head of Marketing at megsApp, explains that the company operates as a Mobile Virtual Network Aggregator (MVNA).
“We therefore enable other organisations, such as the ATKV, to become a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) under us,” says Mighael, adding that megsApp uses MTN’s infrastructure.
“We have a strong relationship with MTN – the network known for offering the best and widest coverage in South Africa – and all our systems are integrated with theirs.”
Mighael explains that megsApp chose to partner with the ATKV because the ATKV mobile network's target market aligns with the company’s mission and vision.
“Our goal is to give all South Africans access to more affordable data and, just as importantly, data and airtime that don’t expire,” he says.
“The cost of living is already so high – everyone deserves better prices.”
When asked why the ATKV mobile network is a better option for consumers compared to staying with existing contract providers in South Africa, Mighael says, “It’s quite simple when we look at the three main reasons people choose a new mobile network.
Firstly, is it more affordable? Secondly, service delivery – is it on the same level as, say, MTN or Vodacom? Absolutely, but we also believe we do it better. Our service is more personal. We don’t have physical stores like the others – everything happens via WhatsApp, which makes it much easier for customers to get help. ATKV mobile network users can expect to be treated far better.”
“Thirdly, the network. You’re not going to sign up with a new service provider if you know the coverage is poor. That’s why we chose MTN as our partner – because for the past six years, they’ve had the best coverage in both urban and rural areas, a fact confirmed by independent studies.
“What also makes the ATKV mobile network truly unique is that its data does not expire. We do, however, also offer expiring data, simply because it’s the more affordable option.”
