Everyday’s a school day at ATKV-Drakensville
Nestled against the slopes of the majestic Drakensberg Mountains, the Environmental Centre at ATKV-Drakensville is a preferred destination for schools that want to offer more than just a breakaway. Here, the focus is on growth, team building, adventure and meaningful learning experiences in a safe, structured environment. Whether it is a sports, cultural, social or adventure camp, each programme is purposefully designed according to the unique needs of the school.
Camps tailored to your school’s needs
No two schools are the same – and therefore no two camps are the same. The Environmental Centre at ATKV-Drakensville customises programmes in line with national curriculum outcomes, as well as the specific objectives of each school. A preliminary activity programme is provided with the quotation and is finalised once the confirmation form has been received. Weather conditions are also taken into account, and alternative activities are arranged when necessary.
This flexibility makes it possible to offer, among others, the following types of camps:
Sports camps: Ideal for teams wanting to focus on team building, fitness and strategic development. Activities may include adventure-based elements that promote perseverance and cooperation.
Cultural camps: With accredited cultural guides leading the way, learners can express their creativity through cultural activities and group projects that build confidence and encourage self-expression.
Social development camps: These camps focus on leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. Through structured group activities, learners develop valuable life skills in a practical context.
Adventure camps: Adventure forms the core of the Environmental Centre’s learning approach. Activities such as abseiling (up to 60 metres), a zipline, archery and guided mountain hiking trails offer not only adrenaline-filled experiences, but also opportunities for personal growth in a safe space.
Safety first – always
Learner safety is the highest priority. All guides are qualified adventure guides, accredited by CATHSETA and the Adventure Qualifications Network. In addition, staff members hold valid first-aid certificates and national police clearances. The resort has public liability insurance and is staffed by a 24-hour security team, with regular patrols conducted throughout the day and night.
Clear rules and regulations apply, and schools retain overall responsibility for their learners, supported by ATKV-Drakensville staff who are on site at all times. To streamline administration, a comprehensive information pack and checklist are provided to schools, including camp confirmation details, indemnity forms and practical arrangements.
All-inclusive for a worry-free experience
Camps include accommodation, meals and full facilitation of the programme. Learners are primarily accommodated in well-equipped dormitories, with additional accommodation allocated according to final numbers. Teachers are housed separately, and wall safes are available for valuable items.
All meals are provided by the Koswerf Restaurant. Learners dine in the dining hall, while teachers enjoy their meals in the restaurant. Special dietary requirements can be discussed in advance, and practical arrangements for specific meal options are clearly communicated.
More than just the campsite
In addition to the activities offered at the resort itself, the surrounding Drakensberg area provides a breathtaking natural classroom. Mountain trails, nature observation and environmental awareness form part of a holistic experience where learners grow not only physically, but also emotionally and socially.

At the Environmental Centre of ATKV-Drakensville, it is about more than just a few days away from the classroom. It is about memories made, bonds strengthened and young people discovering what they are truly capable of.
